Mount St Helens night glow in colour

The USGS Cascades Volcanic Observatory has just released high resolution images taken on 5 November 2004, that show the source of the red glow from the growing lava dome in greater detail than we have seen previously. Looking at these images, especially the second one shown below, clearly shows the larger area of red hot lava to the right of the central plume of steam - corresponding to the position of the most persistent hot spot that shows up on the nightly webcam movies.
